چکیده

T HIS provocative remark has been attributed to the famous industrial statistician, Cuthbert Daniel, by Box et al. (2005) in their well-known text on the design of experiments. Split-Plot experiments were invented by Fisher (1925) and their importance in industrial experimentation has been long recognized (Yates (1936)). It is also well known that many industrial experiments are fielded as split-plot experiments and yet erroneously analyzed as if they were completely randomized designs. This is frequently the case when hard-to-change factors exist and economic constraints preclude the use of complete randomization. Recent work, most notably by Lucas and his coworkers (Anbari and Lucas (1994), Ganju and Lucas (1997, 1999, 2005), Ju and Lucas (2002), Webb et al. (2004)) has demonstrated that many experi-

Split-plot Designs with Mirror Image Pairs as Sub-plots

In this article we investigate two-level split-plot designs where the sub-plots consist of only two mirror image trials. Assuming third and higher order interactions negligible, we show that these designs divide the estimated effects into two orthogonal sub-spaces, separating sub-plot main effects and sub-plot by whole-plot interactions from the rest. Further we show how to construct split-plot...

Maximal Rank - Minimum Aberration Regular Two-Level Split-Plot Fractional Factorial Designs

Regular two-level fractional factorial designs are often used in industrial experiments as screening experiments. When some factors have levels which are hard or expensive to change, restrictions are often placed on the order in which runs can be performed, resulting in a split-plot factorial design. In these cases, the hard or expensive to change factors are applied to whole plots, whereas the...

Journal of Statistics Education, v17n1: Timothy J. Robinson, William A. Brenneman and William R. Myers

While split-plot designs have received considerable attention in the literature over the past decade, there seems to be a general lack of intuitive understanding of the error structure of these designs and the resulting statistical analysis. Typically, students learn the proper error terms for testing factors of a split-plot design via expected mean squares. This does not provide any true insig...

An Algorithm for Finding D-e cient Equivalent-Estimation Second-Order Split-Plot Designs

Many industrial experiments involve restricted rather than complete randomization. This often leads to the use of split-plot designs, which limit the number of independent settings of some of the experimental factors. These factors, named whole-plot factors, are often, in some way, hard to change. The remaining factors, called sub-plot factors, are easier to change. Their levels are therefore i...

Minimum Setup Minimum Aberration Two-level Split-plot Type Designs for Physical Prototype Testing

Companies always seek strategies to shorten product development and reduce time-to-market. Although new technologies allow for less effort in prototyping, physical testing still remains an important step in the product development cycle. Well-planned experiments are useful to guide the decision-making process. During the design of an experiment one of the challenges is to balance limited resour...
